We believe that membership matters for the following reasons:
1. We are called to live in community
In fact, that's what the church is. The greek word "ecclesia" means "called out ones." So we're called to live as a community of followers of Jesus. No one goes it alone. "Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart." (2 Tim. 2:22).
2. We are called to commitment and submission
We live in an individualistic, not communal culture. Therefore, I think of myself in the context of "ME" not "US." So because Americans have a personal, rather than communal worldview, we are especially reluctant to commit to anything or submit to anyone. Unfortunately, the Bible calls for a new paradigm. "Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you." (Hebrews 13:17)
3. The elders give leadership to the church, but...
...the only way we know who we are leading, praying for, responsible for, exercising church discipline with is through membership. Thousands of people will come through our doors. Many of them will not claim to follow Christ or pledge any allegiance to Veritas. We love that! But they are not called to the same standard as those who claim to be members of the Veritas community.
4. What we are calling people to
We require that our members be followers of Jesus Christ, agree with our beliefs, and that they are committed to celebrate, connect and contribute with us.
