Why did you name the church "Veritas"?
"Veritas" is the Latin word for "truth." In John 18:37, Jesus said to Pilate, "for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth." Our church exists for the same reason. We use the Latin word as a reminder that we join history in the pursuit of truth, which is often elusive and polarizing. Truth transcends cultures, nations, and history itself. There's at least one thing we share in common with the Ancients, namely, this quest for truth.
Why did you decide to start a church in Iowa City?
Johnson county is the second fastest growing county in Iowa, and one of the least "churched." Moreover, the best and brightest come from around the world to study at the University of Iowa, and we desire to see them reached and sent out with the life changing message of the good news about Jesus Christ.
Are you going to build your own building soon?
Although we hope to eventually have our own place to gather, not being tied down to a property benefits us in a few ways in the initial stages. First of all, it makes it easier to respond to how God will work in our church, whether he brings 50, 500, or 5,000. Second, we don't want to become a "centralized" church, where the focus of church activity centers around a building. Rather, we want to be smaller, spread out missional communities (i.e. connection groups) who influence Iowa City and the surrounding communities. Finally, we don't want to prematurely yoke ourselves to a financial commitment.
